It’s that time of the year again. One of my favorites. Flashbacks of movies I’ve watched, articles I’ve read, and interviews I’ve seen shoot through my head as I await the first scenes of the red carpet on TV. And then I brace myself for a promising night of glamour and thrill, as actors, directors, writers, editors, artists, and millions of devoted fans like myself (trying to avoid using ‘addicts’ here) get ready for the show to begin. But then I can’t help but look at the clock and notice how late it is considering it all just started. By the time this is over, the annoying bunch of reminders and alarms on my mobile will start dancing around to announce that I should get up for work. However, thoughts of my warm bed, a productive day at work tomorrow, and of course the equally-valid option of watching the rerun tomorrow evening like normal human beings fade away as the host of the Oscars kicks off with the first joke.
Anyways, this year I have my fingers crossed for The Departed. This Scorsese beauty is probably my favorite movie of the year, and I really hope he nails it for best director this time. For Best Picture, The Queen, Babel, and The Departed are among the nominees and although Babel is a strong candidate, the fact that The Departed is such a great piece of drama with such an elite ensemble of actors, not to mention the amazing plot and direction, I think it would be fair if it wins. It was quite interesting actually to watch Martin Sheen performing outside the realm of his presidential character! And I also enjoyed Mark Wahlberg’s performance in his supporting role, and of course DiCaprio’s ever-increasing talent and Jack Nicholson’s genius.
I guess my favorite part of the whole thing is the speeches, especially those given by actors and actresses in leading roles and by directors. The whole thing is a great and beautiful acknowledgment of great work, great art, and deserving talent. I can only imagine how one who hears his/her name called could feel at that moment. It just has to be overwhelming.
Well in any case (making coffee now), the envelopes have been sealed and the speeches have been written, and all that remains is for us to wait and see what happens. As I look forward to go and watch and, later on, to discuss the winners of tonight, I wish you all a good time and hope that you would enjoy.
